What in your practice inspires you to teach? The genuine joy that I feel on my mat inspired me to teach yoga. The power of the connectedness that I cultivate in my practice, makes me eager to help my students find that same elation. That feeling of shutting off everything in the outside world, from the moment you step on your mat and truly committing to yourself for that time, is a sacred thing. Being able to help others get to that magical place, is what makes me radiate from within.
Tell us a little about your yoga journey and how this influences what you bring across in your teaching? My very first yoga class was in a corporate gym, I was 22 years old, fresh out of college and very skeptical of the groovy instructor. Little did I know, that very first class would have me hooked for life. For the first time, possibly ever, yoga made me connect to my breath and turn my attention INSIDE. I was in awe of the way that I felt when I walked out of that room: empowered, connected and full of love & I was in awe that these things were already in me, waiting to be brought to life. From that day forward, each time I found myself in a new town, I'd find a new studio & that was where I found my 'tribe'. Yoga has given me some of my best friends and some of my happiest days; its always made me feel like one small part of something extraordinary. After over ten years of practice, I completed my 200 hour teacher training with Kaia and am currently working toward 300 hours. As an instructor, I draw from my passion and love for the practice and try to give each student an experience similar to those that I've been lucky enough to have on my mat. I feel more connected than ever and I am so excited to see what happens next along the way.
What is your favorite activity outside of yoga and how does yoga help this activity? Yoga brings lightness and clarity to every aspect of my life and inspires me to spread that to those around me. Through years of pranayama, meditation and asana practice, I can approach my life and the people in it with greater attention and from a more mindful place, from the depths of my heart; yoga has made me a stronger partner, a more giving friend, daughter and sister. Yoga also instills a sense of freedom & encourages exploration and play that I infuse into my job outside of the studio, as a fashion stylist and visual merchandiser.
How would you describe your teaching? My classes are a playful exploration of movement and self. I like to challenge my students with creative sequencing; giving them choices along the way to allow a unique adventure to present itself. As a lover of music, I use a wide variety to drive the vibe and the energy of the class; creating a soundscape to breathe and move to. I try to stay connected to my students throughout their practice to give them exactly what they came for; whether that's a strong, steady flow, something sweet and slow, or healthy mix of both.
What makes teaching at Kaia yoga a unique experience? It gives me great joy to be a member of the kula at Kaia. As a regular practitioner at the Greenwich studio, I decided to enroll in Kaia's 200 hour teacher training, which I completed in the Spring of 2015. Looking back, I couldn't have predicted that I'd now be teaching 4 classes weekly, and teaching many yogis that I've practiced next to over the years. The staff and students at Kaia have been so supportive along my journey and I consider myself lucky to be a member of both teams.
